Obviously backlinks to a site help and knowing how many you have that the search engines like passing link juice through is helpful. Google do let searchers to use the link: operator to show some links that are pointing to a page. However, from a link building perspective its useless.
Some facts on the Google link: operator:
1. It only ever shows a small random sample.
2. The sample is random.
3. There is no criteria other than random for being in the sample.
4. The sample does not contain the only links that Google knows about and uses. They know about and use a lot more than what is in the sample.
5. A number of years ago, the sample contained only sites that have a Google PR>4, but that is not the case anymore.
6. The correct syntax for the operator is for there to be no gap between the link: and the domain name.
7. Google show more links in Webmaster Tools when looking for more backlinks to your site.
8. You can’t use the link: operator to draw conclusions about your competitors links or the search engines rankings (which is probably why Google only shows you a sample).
Conclusion:
Never waste your time even looking at it. Its useless. Use other tools.
