Pretend for a moment if you were a search engine and you wanted to use the link profile of the sites returned for a particular search result. A lot of sites have the sort of low quality links that you get from directory submission, article submission, forum profile spamming, etc. How would go about determining which is the better site to rank higher. Maybe you could determine which sites rank well for a particular keyword and then see who they link to. If a number of the sites that rank well for a particular keyword all link to one or two sites in that niche, maybe they are the sites that should rank well.
These sites are known as authority web sites, as a lot of other sites ranking for that keyword are linking to them. This says a lot about them. If you want to rank well, you need to search for these authority sites for the keywords you want to rank for and somehow get a link from them. This is not an easy task, but what does it say to the search engines if you do get a link from them. It will certainly say a lot more to the search engines that this one link from an authority web site than 1000 forum profiles that were spammed to get links.
