Webmasters always want to know how much traffic they get to their website and also how that compares with their competitors. Unfortunately these is no real way to know what your competitors are getting. Obviously they want more than their competitors. Some webmasters do use the Alexa rankings as a measure of traffic. However the Alexa rankings are flawed and biased to the extent that they do not have a lot of meaning. Alexa collect data on the websites that users that have the Alex toolbar installed in their internet browser. Alexa claim that an impressive 1 million users have the toolbar installed. Alexa then rank sites based on the number of visitors they get. The most visited sit will be ranked 1. If a site has an Alexa ranking of 578, it means that it is the 578th most visited site on the web.
The problem with the ranking is that it is a biased group of people who use the Alexa toolbar. They tend to be more technically orientated that the average web searchers, so the Alexa ranking will be biased towards more technically orientated sites that these people tend to visit. The Alexa ranking also means nothing. It is not used by search engines or anything else to rank a site. Also, if a website wants to improve their Alexa ranking, they just need to install the toolbar and visit their site a few times a day (even better if you have some friends that can do it as well!).
